H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds is one of science fiction literature’s most enduring classics. As one of the earliest examples of an alien invasion narrative, this 19th century tale of London’s violent takeover by an alien race has significantly influenced science fiction literature as well as television and cinema for generations. Wells is extremely adept at exposing the virtues and vices of humanity against a backdrop of crisis, and this talent lends substance to this dramatic adventure story.

This book is short and to the point, a beautiful bridge between Arctic Bound and Dire Cravings if I do say so myself. The Reaping pretty much finishes up what fans were waiting for when Arctic Bound ended, and it hints at even more trouble for our favorite wolf pack in the next book. The sex is sparse.. to be fair it's about non existence. There's only one sex scene, but with the Trials going on, the reader won't even notice, or care about the lack of bestial love-making that Victor and Nerina are known for. What this novella doesn't lack in, is action. From page one there's something going. This book is a bit more fast paced than Arctic Bound was, but at the same time the story isn't rushed. As stated it's the perfect bridge between book 1 and book 2. This is a quick read, less than 25k words, so it shouldn't take more than a few hours to leave, and if you're a fan of Tigris Eden, you'll be begging for more when you get done. I look forward to the next installment of this series. “I'm Jesca. I have intense nightmares nightly and hallucinations of dark auras closing in on me daily. Strangers’ faces distort before my eyes and I hear voices in my head. All symptoms of insanity, ‘illusions in reality’, right? Wrong. This is my reality and it has been set askew.” Jesca Gershon Sera discovers that she is part of a legacy and a fellowship of guardians destined to protect the human race from a galactic event that will invade and evolve our world. *The Piercing the Fold series is intended for Mature Young Adult and Adult readers due to the the paranormal and unorthodox scientific concepts addressed throughout. This series contains a rich mixture of the paranormal, science fiction, romance, adventure, and suspense.* FREECu's ThoughtsI'll begin by saying this.. If you do not have a love for aspects of science and science fiction, you may not enjoy the some parts of this book. I however love it. Venessa has masterfully brought the theory of wormholes and traversing the space time continum to life. Imagine a device that could instantly open a wormhole and take you within a mere seconds to another galaxy light years from our own. Now imagine the ramifications of leaving said wormhole open indefinitely and you have the basis for this book.
It's been a very long time since I've come across a book on this topic where the author did so much research that all the fiction mixed with it seem real. This book is perfect for those who gaze up to the stars every night wondering if there is life out there. I absolutely love the amount of training the "green peas" get put through.. It's impossibly hard, tedious, and challenges death at every turn. The detailing for the training sessions is phenominal really. I love that each new guardian has their own special abilities and a training guardian with similar ones to teach them. The reader can sympathize with just about every character they come across. Their feelings will become the reader's and the reader will be tugged along on one hell of a journey. There are a couple of twists the story takes that will blog the reader away. The reader will not see them coming but once they are presented the reader will wonder how they didn't figure it themselves. The twists also snap some very vital pieces of the puzzle into place. This story will appeal to a multitude of readers, from sci fans fans, to romance fans, even to fantasy and odd fiction fans. The tale Venessa has stared to weave within this first installment is definitely worth the time to read it. I look forward to Surfacing the Rim and what happens to the characters I have grown to know and love. On the outside, seventeen year-old Selena McKinley is like any other teenage girl. Yet, Selena has always felt as if she doesn’t belong and is counting the days to graduation and her freedom from the small town that makes her feel so out of place, when the arrival of a stranger turns her world upside down. Selena will learn just how different she is and the truth of where she comes from. A lost princess, they call her, the catalyst for a war involving a world that she was taken from as a child. An evil queen obsessed with her own beauty with a plan to enslave the human race.…the notion seems so silly, yet Selena knows in her heart that it is true. Then there is Titus, the shape shifter whose blue eyes and claims of destiny hold her heart captive. Can Selena find the strength to do what she must while following her heart? Cu's ThoughtsI absolutely loved how this book begins. It's like the reawakening of a favorite fairy tale! The incorporation of everyone's favorite paranormal brothers is simply wonderful, especially when the reader finds out where they have been all this time!
Basically the Queen of Northern corner of Fallada is writing to the reader. She tells how the princesses, mainly the heirs to the three corners are kidnapped by the evil Queen of the West corner and sent into our world. Jacob and Willhelm are given the task to find them and bring them home. That will be hard since they are all teenagers or young adults now, they were infants when they were stolen. Time is different on each side of the wall, that's explained in vivid detailed. I won't ruin this review with any spoilers. The further into this story you fall, the more you feel it all around you. Once you enter Fallada, it's as though every fairytale you ever heard comes alive in all new and interesting ways. I have just ONE problem with a part in the story. When the party existed the ship, they were two days journey from the Fae Kingdom. They put on the tailismens which were supposed to block out the mirrors, and yet Eranna used her mirror and easily located them a day later. After speaking with the author, there IS a small part missing that was overlooked during beta and editing that explained that Eranna was able to use the mirror despite the talismans due to how much stronger she'd grown in the dark arts. Mystery solved there and hopefully if the book comes out with a second edition that part will be added. Adrah's abilities are simply mystifying and it's a wonder she's the queen of all the Fae. With her abilities and her heart I'm sure she could win anyone over and warm the coldest heart... Well maybe not the coldest, I doubt anyone can get through that hollow black void Eranna calls a heart. Selena and Titus' interactions will bring the reader a whole range of emotion, most of the time a smile or a soft chuckle. They are definitely the light in the dark times they ae engulfed in. I think the thing I enjoyed most were the desciptions of the different kingdoms. Goldun and Damu are such a contrast to each other in sight, sound, and smell, as well as the beings that are citizens are each. The descriptions are just detailed enough for you to form your own image of them, and hints of the things Selena smells waft to you from your imagination, but thankfully they aren't over done like you find in some books where the author just tries too hard. Alicia Michaels has hit the nail on the hammer with her style, it's sure to please every reader younger and old. I have to admit, Selena's speech did bring tears to my eyes. It was very well "spoken" and had I been there I would have been the first to stand with her for the coming of the Red Dawn. I was sorry to see her story end and I hope she makes a return, if nothing more than a cameo appearance in the story of Eranna's daughter which I'm sure is the next in this series. There's a couple of editing errors that are easily missed to the untrained eye, but nothing too drastic to turn the reader off. December 21, 2012 - Will that fateful day destroy our world, or did the Mayans have something else in mind? Maya Delaney knows. Unfortunately. Maya Delaney is just an average sixteen-year- old. She’s busy dealing with exams, her soon to be ex-boyfriend and fitting in. But Maya’s got bigger problems. She’s hiding a major secret from her dad and having strange visions she can’t control. In her struggle to figure out who she is, she learns that she is meant to fulfill an ancient Mayan Prophesy and bring forth a New Age on earth. Will the spirit magic Maya wields be enough to defeat Toltec, an evil society bent on keeping her from her destiny? Or will that destiny destroy her? Cu's ThoughtsThis story is definitely interesting. Maya is Mayan, whose grandmother holds very dear the ancient ways of their people. She tells Maya a few certain things (I won't ruin the story for you) and Maya pretty much flips out over what she's told. Though I suppose if I were in her situation I'd probably freak out too even if it wasn't as uncommon in the story as it is in the real world.
I quite enjoyed Maya's narrative, though she "talked" in the narration as if she weren't exactly seventeen (she gave the air of a fifteen year old), her little quips are very funny and there were many many moments when I'd crack a smile or burst out with a laugh while I read. It's very easy to slide into Maya's world. You easily get lost in the characters and backdrop. The Mayan culture is woven through out this story in amazing ways. Even while the reader enjoys the detailed adventure Maya and the others embark on, so much is learned about the lore and beliefs of the people. I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to getting the second so I can continue the story to see what happens next. Luke and his twin sister Sera have unusual abilities. Hers is a gift--she can heal with a touch of her hand. His is a curse--he can see the future but he can't do anything about it. On a hike up the mountain, Luke has a vision unlike any other--one that leaves him terrified. Knowing that it will come true--and that he must do everything in his power to stop it--leaves his own future uncertain. Cu's ThoughtsThis one is such a tease! It definitely leaves you aching to start on Intangible. Here you get a small taste of Luke and Sera and the things they can do. The gift of intuition and the gift of healing. Though this story mainly focuses on the intuition aspect obviously.
The only flaw I found to this was not in the story itself. It was in the italics. J.Meyer forgot to undo after the last vision Luke has. But it's a small error and only someone as ocd as I am about things will find it a bother. Because this story is so short, I feel I can't rightfully give it a 5 since there weren't enough pages to give me much of an impression of anything. I do however enjoy the story for what it is. |
